NUFFIELD FARMING CONFERENCE 2023
Highlights reel capturing the 2023 Nuffield Farming Conference in Exeter, Devon.
Each year, the Nuffield Farming Scholarships Trust brings together new and past scholars to share research. The gathering strengthens the network that carries ideas back into agriculture.
The brief
The brief to MADE BY WOODSMOKE was ambitious and timeโsensitive:
- Record all sixty presentations across two stages
- Film a VIP address at the gala dinner
- Deliver a highlights film that captures the character of the week
- Publish edits as the event unfolded so alumni could follow along in near real time
Delivery hinged on a production plan that traded complexity for reliability. Two Canon C70 cameras covered each stage with consistent framing and colour. Audio came directly from Saturn AVโs mixing desks to ensure speech clarity matched the inโroom experience. I maintained strict file management. When a talk ended, I backed up the media, labeled it, and moved it into editing immediately. A templated graphics package gave every presentation the same opening titles and lowerโthirds while keeping the visual identity pared back and readable.
The highlights film unfolded in parallel. I shot handheld on a RED Dragon X in 6K with a stabilised 24โ105mm lens and an Easyrig to stay nimble. That combination allowed for quiet movement around the venue and quick switches from room to room. The coverage strategy mirrored the rhythm of the event: arrivals and informal conversations, the cadence of talks, breakout discussions, and the sense of momentum that builds toward the gala dinner. Short scholar testimonials weave through the edit, giving the piece a clear, human voice.
Editing and post production
Postโproduction ran continuously. I cut talks as soon as I captured them, then built the highlights video in iterative passes through the week. Music from Musicbed adds pace and warmth, and I matched colour across mixed lighting for consistency.
The result was a full set of talks live on YouTube ahead of the closing session and a concise, cinematic highlights film that organisers could use for future outreach.
